For the game I wanted to create something that involved both Bear and the species that the children would be collecting in the cards. My initial idea was to have Bear catch as many fish as possible. But I realised that this wouldn't be very good at celebrating diversity of species if they were being caught. Also I wanted to raise awareness for over fishing, not promote it. So I needed to come up with another idea to find fish in the game.
I came up with the idea of Bear taking pictures of the species instead, like he would be collecting them for an album. So the more unique species pictures you get the more points you get. Also, you'd get more points for pictures of rarer fish. You take a picture of the fish by clicking on them, some would be harder to take than others because they would move faster or only appear once in the game.
I mocked up what the game could look like using a similar style to the cards. Although I can't actually make and animate the game I think these images give a clear sense of how the game works as well as how it would look. I asked for feedback on this and people said they liked the fun concept. However they didn't like how the game was framed like one of the cards, they would prefer if it was full screen. They also had a really good suggestion that I could do levels and the harder the levels get the deeper into the ocean they go, making it harder for you to find as many fish.
I changed the game to a fullscreen layout after the feedback, which I think does look a lot better and it makes the game more immersive. I also added the levels in, with the deeper level involving a torch to make it more difficult. The fish would also change at different depths making it more interesting for the players.
I also thought that through this game and the medals they gain, they could rank up in the diving academy, so that there is an incentive to playing the higher levels. As the children rank up in the academy they would unlock more things to do within the submarine and maybe even more rooms.
Overall I'm really happy with the game, I think it shows off my illustrative style really well and would promote the diversity of species which is my main aim for this project. If I was a child I know I would love to play this game.
