I submitted my Penguin book cover today. Overall I’m pretty pleased with the outcome because I feel like it represents the book in a simple manner while following the briefs request for a strong use of typography.
Strengths & What I liked
I feel like the design benefits from being simpler than my original design, however. Also I feel that it is more relevant to the target audience as the designs I was doing before felt too busy, where as I believe teens appreciate more simple designs. Additionally I think that the use of red is really strong and bold, making it stand out from other book covers.
Weaknesses & What I didn’t like
When I left this brief halfway through my dissertation I felt like I wanted to abandon it because none of my ideas were strong enough. I pushed myself to complete this brief after the dissertation was over and I think that the final outcome is a bit amateur because of this.
Time Management
Although I have spent a lot longer on this brief than I originally had planned due to the dissertation taking precedent. I also went back and forth a lot between designs and in fact, the final design changed completely throughout the process. I am glad that I started again however as I feel the interruption in the design process would have ruined my other designs.
Final Outcome
I feel like the final outcome represents the book in a simple manner while following the briefs request for a strong use of typography. There are areas in which I could improve, like the back design which less time was spent on. However it still makes for a successful cover.
