I was really unsure about what to do for the homelessness brief other that I want the people I talk to to gain something from it. I was initially thinking of a publication but after finding out that St George's Crypt had already commissioned one from previous LCA students it would be pretty redundant repeating a similar product. I then moved onto thinking about perhaps fundraising exhibitions where I got entries submitted and sold prints to raise money for charities around Leeds.
However talking through these ideas and the general spring board of "Homeless people in Leeds" to Alec has really cleared things up for me. He suggested that interviewing people or even observing or documenting their natural environment would be useless because the fact I would be there would influence them whether I could help it or not. Also it would be simply taking away from them and leaving them on the streets which would be pretty heartless. Instead he suggested to give something back in a way. That I could run a workshop to give them a life skill that they could take forward into the real world and use on their CVs. Leaving a lasting impression and then going from there. It would almost become a collaborative project with a homeless person - connecting with someone and producing artwork based on that.
So I am going to get into contact with some of the local homeless-ness charities about Leeds and have open conversations to see whether they would be able to facilitate any of my ideas. Even providing a space where I could communicate would be really helpful.
